The Usual Suspects, Game of Thrones and Doctor Who.
The film The Usual Suspects is feature film it is one of these as it was given a theatrical release and is in only one instalment this being just under two hours. However something like Game of Thrones is in a serial format you can tell this as it has multiple instalments which often don't contain one single story in them making them branch into each other; but in contrast a show like Doctor who it often contains a single story per episode making it a series, however Doctor Who does sometimes have a interconnecting story throughout the entire series.
The Usual Suspects is a crime film you can tell this as it incorporates allot of the common narrative techniques into it. This being giving the audience a mystery throughout the entire film until it's soled at the very end. Game of Thrones is also a fantasy based TV show as it uses allot of fantasy elements and plot points these being magic, dragons, knights, kings and queens and so on. Because of this it has created a world what is foreign as someone new to it won't understand however it'll be familiar at the same time. Doctor Who is a sci-fi series as like Game of Thrones it uses many plot points what is shared across the genre, these being time travel, space ships, robots, aliens and very advanced technology again in contrast because of the shows format it's easy for someone new to it to understand what is happening as what is happening as all of the needed information would be in that episode so you wouldn't have needed to see episodes from months ago to understand what is happening.
The film the Usual Suspects is a Single strand film this being because it follows the story which Verbal is telling there are other main characters however Verbal is with them all and not often by himself from them for the bulk of the film. The film is shot in a realistic style as the camera and sound is always something that most people would be to see and do themselves as nothing out of this world occurs. This is a short form story as even though it nearly reaches two hours that's a small amount of time compared to other characters such as ones in Game of Thrones and Doctor Who. It has a realist style as nothing out of this world or peculiar happens. This is a short-form based entertainment as we spend nearly two hours with these characters what' very little time compared with the amount of time spent with TV characters. It is a non-linear film as the film often jumps from different time periods in the film going back and forth to tell the story. The film has an closed ending as when it ends it gives the idea that the detective will never get anywhere close to finding him ever again meaning leaving the audience with the idea there won't be a sequel.
Game of Thrones is a multi-strand serial show as it follows many different characters from many different places some of these can be good some bad the affect this will have is that you can see both sides of the fight letting you see what the different motives they have. This show has a very anti-realist style this being because many of the fantasy elements such as dragons as it makes them have a camera angle high in the sky to create a establishing shot but with a slight degree of realism. This is a long-form story as the time with some of the characters is very high as some have been in the show from the start to the current day so the amount of knowledge of that character is very high. The show is a linear show as it's always moving forward however recently a character gained the ability to look back in time creating a non-linear element to though it was designed just to give more information about certain characters and their backstory. At the current moment the show has been left on an open ending this was done by showing what the different characters plans are and moving them in position to full fill them.
Doctor Who this is a single strand show which follows the main character of the Doctor as he goes around trying to defeat whatever evil there is sometimes it may see what his companion is doing however they are normally by the Doctors side. This is done in a anti-realist style this can be seen from the characters as they often are aliens and also some of the shots such as the time vortex what no one could ever actually shoot. This is a technically linear show even though it has time travel it's mainly used as more of a set tool not to interfere and jump back and forth between the plot. The show varies with it's endings sometimes they end with an open ending bleeding into a future episode though allot of the time the episode is over and nothing more will be said about it. Though it can be said that they are left open as they always contain a next time to give a quick preview into what's going to happen.
In the closing scene of The Usual Suspects Verbal has just left the office being interrogated leaving Kujan in there this has the camera moving back away as well as Kujan closing the door, this is also metaphorical not just physical as it lets the audience know that he's closing the door/case on Verbal assuming he is unimportant to him now. It then cuts back to the hospital where for some even more closure as some audience members maybe reluctant to believe what they've been told and demand more evidence, however the camera draws towards the policeman creating and idea that the story isn't finished and some mystery still there. The film then cuts to Verbal collecting his stuff with the officer reading out what he handed in, the dialogue here is giving the audience more information that Verbal has the same stuff as seen at the start of the film giving the audience hints that Verbal maybe Keyser Soze as they have the same belongings. Soon as he collects these the camera cuts backs to Kujan in the office still with the camera drawing in still telling the audience that there's mystery there. The two officers in the room are talking about what just happened and as soon as they say Keyser Soze the film cuts to Verbal once again however nothing special is happening he's just leaving giving even more hints to what's to come when he leaves it goes to the office still drawing in still giving the idea of mystery. When it goes to Kujan it gives the idea that something is going towards him or a sudden point of realisation, it then cuts to the corner of the board with Verbal talking in the back ground which is non diegetic that way the audience know what's going through his head leading to it syncing to where Kujan sees exactly what Verbal said letting him and the audience know that what he said was a lie. When this happens he drops his cup with him paying no notice when it smashes ton emphasise this the cup makes no noise and is shown multiple times with every time making its point stronger. It then goes into a short bit where the camera dashes about the board with fast cuts showing that Kujan is scanning the board quickly panicking looking for anything what could help him, as well as this multiple random lines of Verbal’s are being said demonstrating to the audience that he's trying to put it together and find the links within his story. As he does he searches or the final piece being Kobayashi as the name rings in his head he draws in on the cup he dropped earlier letting him know for sure and the audience that Verbal was Keyser Soze and that he helped him make his story. It then goes to very fast camera movements to follow Kujan as he chases Verbal the fast movement of the camera tells the audience that he's still panicking and moving fast while showing the urgencies he has. A contrast does then appear between the two of Verbal and Kujan, as Kujan is running around with quick cuts everywhere while Verbal is slowly limping everywhere with more tracking shots with less cuts. Another is that when Kujan talks he's being loud and aggressive while Verbal still is slowly limping away not making any noise to bring attention to himself making more differences between the two as the amount of diegetic sound is very different showing the amount of urgency the two have in their movements and speed. When Verbal gets outside the camera continues to track him however they've put it so that a car can be seen in the background this makes the audience confused as we thought that Verbal was Keyser Soze however it looks as if someone is following him stalking him waiting to get him. Following that the camera looks to Kujan again drawing in to try and find him making him appear even more desperate to find him. It then cuts to Verbal's feet we know this as he's the only person we've seen in the film who has a limp however this limp turns into a full walk which tells the audience that Verbal has been lying throughout the entire film meaning nothing he said in the film may have never happened. He then proceeds to get the Golden lighter out with his watch again making it abundantly clear that he is Keyser Soze as these are the props he had at the start of the film. The car then pulls up while being in the background with the door open however we don't know who's in the car until the camera moves again showing it was Kobayashi. As soon as he gets in the car to be driven away the camera goes to Kujan with the camera backing out showing that he was so close and now he's gotten away and to make this even stronger it cuts to a bit earlier with the sound playing over where Verbal says that they'll never here from Keyser Soze ever again this is done to give it a closed ending and to also remind them that Verbal had been doing it from the start.
In the opening scene of Game of Thrones we see a draw gate and three men on horses wearing black with flame torches. The misc en scene here immediately tells the audience that this show is going to be very dark as it can be seen from the clothes they're wearing and that the weather appears to be very grey. The torches tell us that it will be set in an older part of time as well as the horses as more modern time set shows would be more likely to use bikes or cars on snowy terrain. It then cuts to a shot of the three men going down a dark tunnel the use of this means that when they get out it'll be more impressive and when they do it goes to an establishing shot showing the scale of the world that they are in as they come out of this massive wall what couldn't be real as it appears to be built from snow and ice. It then cuts to a shot from within the forest looking out to them giving an idea that something is watching them as if they are being hunted. After many tracking shots of one of the men gets of his horse. He has a small body language telling the audience that he is afraid of what he's doing making the audience wonder what is so terrifying to support this he also moves slowly as if he doesn't want to go over to where he is. The close up of his face shows the terror he is feeling in his face. When he gets down it still shows the fear he's feeling as he's edging closer and closer towards the what he's going to see increasing the tension of the scene as he's constantly been building this moment up. When we get to it the camera cuts back and forth between all of the mangled and decapitated bodies and also this mans face to show his reaction as the more he looks the worse it becomes. To him ultimately seeing a child pinned to a tree. The audience also gets the same level of shock as there's a close up shot of this child from out of nowhere. This leads to him running away however the camera has put this child in the foreground and the man in the background so the audience are unable to see this that way they will become more use to it throughout this serial. This goes back to him running away on his horse however the camera shot of from the woods/behind the tree is still there making as if whatever done this to all these people is still there and nearly came out and attacked him. It then cuts to another establishing shot of what's happened so if any of the audience don't know what happened then they'll be able to see what has happened, as well as this it also shows that whatever done this done it with purpose as the bodies form a shape making the audience wonder what that shape means in relation to the show as they wouldn't shown it again or organised the bodies like this if it wasn't important. When this man gets back tot he others he talks to them, he does this all shaken up while the other two remain calm showing the affect that this had on him in comparison to the other two. Eventually they go there and as soon as they do the camera goes to a low angle facing them showing their reactions to what they find while keeping the audience in suspense. It shows the leader of this party with a smile on his face as previously he had been in disbelief leading to having a over the shoulder shot of the man who found this with it showing that all of the bodies are gone confusing the audience as they had also seen this giving mystery and also terror to the scene as whatever moved the bodies probably killed them. Music starts to play over making this even more mysterious but also letting the audience know something is going to happen soon. After many shots one of the characters discovers something red in the ground with another over the shoulder shot this is chosen once again so that you can see what this older man is seeing as at that point it cuts very quickly showing the a blade moving and with the combination of someone screaming the audience know that he's been killed and it was quick and swift. Horses then gallop across the screen showing that they to are scared as the man turns around an looks petrified however it cuts a long shot of a child standing by themselves with nothing else there what is strange and has a scaring effect to it as well. When it cuts back to the child it's a close up that way the audience would be able to see that she looks cold as ice with her eyes clearly affected showing she's dead. It then goes to a chase section where many strange creature noises are made showing that the creatures are chasing him and that with the quick camera cuts it will also disorientate them not letting them know what's happening. When he reaches the other man the use of close ups and extreme close ups make sit appear as they are both next two each other however it then turns out that they're a bit of distance away from each other leading to one being killed out of nowhere, this causes the other to drop to his knees showing how devastating it is to him. When it gets to the end of the scene when it turns black making the audience think that he's going to be killed next.
Near the end of the Doctor Who episode "Doomsday" the Doctor and Rose are sucking in many Daleks and Cybermen into the time vortex. To show the power that this place has there is a very strong white light coming from it this is chosen as a white is a strong light what can also be blinding saying that it's also dangerous When it cuts to a long shot of the top floor it's showing how many are being sucked in and as it's from the outside it demonstrates how powerful it is as they're being sucked in from everywhere. After that it cuts to a shot of people emerging from behind bins and benches letting the audience know that they were hiding behind hem however it is used to reassure the audience that it's now safe and the day is saved now that they're appearing. Shortly afterwards there's a close up of the Doctor's face what's done to show the stress he's going through to do this as he clings on for dear life. It then cuts to rose with another close up of her smiling making it appear that she's enjoying herself with the Doctor. However the lever starts to move which if falls stops all of the work they're about to complete. So to stop this Rose goes and pulls it back while being nearly sucked into the vortex. This clearly worries the Doctor as another close up revels he looks worried for her well being telling the audience that he fears for what may happen to her. When she lets go to get the lever they both have the same expression demonstrating that they both feel the same way and they both know what's going to happen. An extreme close up of the lever shows the slight movements that it's makes it more powerful showing that what she's doing is dangerous adding a large amount of tension to the scene as previously it was said if you fall in you can't come back. Afterwards it slows down making emphasising that she's being dragged in the time vortex. It then cuts back and forth between her, the Doctor & her grip of the lever building the tension even more as she starts to lose her grip. When she can't hold on no longer it slows down showing the audience the emotion on her face as she falls this causes the Doctor to yell her name demonstrating how traumatizing this is for him. Then out of the blue Pete Tyler appears and the show goes back to a normal speed to make it all the more showing to the viewer. We can tell when the job has been completed as the bright light is gone and the Doctor has a shocked face. When it cuts to rose banging on the wall the lighting has gone blue what would have been chosen as blue is most commonly associated with saddens. When it shows the rest of the family it shows them calm demonstrating that they aren't as affected as Rose is that they won't miss him as much. It then cuts to the shots where it appears that the Doctor and Rose are on opposite sides of a wall however it is used to show that they still feel there is a connection there. They both show sadness in different ways as Rose is all teary while the Doctor is more controlled and just crushed, this would remind the audience that they are both different people as one is human and the other alien. When the Doctor walks away he looks distort, as he doesn't know what to do now. It then cuts to Rose and her family showing the families reaction slowly as it emphases that they too feel bad for Rose right now.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
The Grand Budapest Hotel is a comedy film from Wes Anderson which was Directed by him and also produced by him with Jeremy Dawson, Steven Rales and Scott Rudin. The story was inspired by the writings of Stefan Zweig. It also had a very large cast of many very good actors though it mainly focuses around Ralph Fiennes and Tony Revolori characters. The film had a budget of $25,000,000 and had made $59,000,000 with also winning four Oscars for it's music, costume, make up andset design. The reason this had won these awards is because of the incredible Misc en scene.
This film is very particular about it's misc en scene for example the colour patterns used on screen. The Grand Budapest has a purple colour scheme while for example the police in the film use the colour gray. The use of this is to give the film a certain style and to also to help the audience identify who is part of what group within the film and the relationships in the film.
Another technique what is used within the film is also the cinematography. This is all done it precise movements. The purpose of this is to demonstrate how up straight they are in the hotel how everything is set to a perfect standard. This also can allow for it to be used in comedic terms as often in the film with such precise actions with the camera it allows for less than formal actions to take place and that clash makes it comic.

Children of men
Children of men is a 2006 film within the genre of science fiction and drama. It has the themes of anarchy, trust and belief. It stars Clive Owens, Micheal Caine and Julianne Moore. The film film had a budget of $76 million and made $70 million back however has received very good reviews. The film was directed by Alfonso Cuaron produced by Hilary Shor, Iain Smith, Tony Smith, Marc Abraham and Eric Newman, the film was based on the book from P.D James. The film had been nominated for 3 Oscars these being writing, cinematography and editing.
This film is set in the near future a way the film communicates this apart from having it in text is by using the set. For example the vehicles in this world are slightly different as a lot of them are fitted with a steel grating around them saying that it isn't safe clearly. Another way they use the misc en scene to make the world seem grim is that there is a constant advertisement for a suicide kit what is bright in contrast to everything else meaning that this is world where suicide is deemed to be a good thing and is encouraged.
The cinematography is a another way they demonstrate the different atmospheres. In areas where it's relaxed a wide of colours are used showing that the world still has a lot in it in the form of hope and a future. While in more depressing segments the colour gray is very dominant on screen which is often seen as being as miserable and oppressive colour.
One of the films key themes is trust as the trust between different characters is something that constantly changes. Some turn from being entrusting of others to relying on them while others trust them then turn to hiding away. At the very last moment there is still a question of trust a Theo still is questing so that when the film ends it's even more open ended as without what he says it would have been open but with very little doubt however with just a few words performed as well as they are it puts a large amount of doubt into our minds.

Favourite Director/Film/Genre
My personal favorite director is Quentin Tarantino. The reasoning behind this is that I enjoy the extremes goes to in his language and violence. I feel that he's constantly pushing what can be done within films. This obviously comes with it's controversial moments however I like the fact he just brushes them off..
My personal favorite film is "Tropic Thunder"(2008). I love this film mainly for it's comedy and for it's action. Like Tarantino it uses a blend of both action and comedy however a difference is that in Tarantino's films they have more of a calmed tone and slower pacing to create a more atmospheric affect. I enjoy the slap stick comedy that is in the film. I feel that this is done using different affects such as changing the filters on the screen as it shows how they turn from acting in the film to being themselves within the film.
My favorite genre is action however I also like comedies as well as a close second. I enjoy these as they have so much going on and shows a world and experiences that I'll never see or have. It creates escapism which some audience do search for when they go to watch a film. Often Quentin Tarantino's films fall into this genre due to their excessive and comedic violence.
